CHAP International serves in the beautiful nation of Liberia, West Africa. Our Liberia office is located in the capital city of Monrovia. We spend a lot of our time and resources ministering to the community near our Monrovia office in the Sinkor district. We want to make an impact in and around our community.
From 1989 to 2003 Liberia suffered through consecutive civil wars that brutally tore apart the people and the country. It was one of the bloodiest wars in the history of Africa leaving the economy and infrastructure in shambles. CHAP International Founder Stan Weaver traveled to Liberia in 2002 to build windmills, unaware of the horrific battlefield he was heading into. From building windmills at night to the sound of gunfire to having automatic weapons pointed at his head by child soldiers, Stan experienced the harsh realities of war in Liberia. It was through these dramatic experiences that God led him to do something.
Liberia is an absolutely beautiful country, with lush, green rain forests, gorgeous coastlines, and incredible people. It is a country rich in diamonds, gold, and iron ore. Despite being rich in natural resources it is one of the poorest countries in the world!
68% of Liberians live in poverty on less than $1 a day. 35% of the country is malnourished, with the children being mostly affected. 61% of Liberians have access to safe drinking water. Running water and electricity are non-existent for a majority of the population. According to UNICEF more than 250,000 Liberian orphans lost their parents in the war to illness or other causes. Access to quality healthcare is very limited for most Liberians, especially in rural communities like River Gee County. Lack of healthcare, malnutrition, and lack of proper sewer systems turns common and preventable diseases fatal. The education system in Liberia was greatly affected during the war. About 50% of the population is considered literate. For the children that are able to attend school the quality of education is often lacking.
The deadly Ebola virus that ravished Liberia and West Africa from 2014 into 2016 has caused irreversible damage to the economy, and most importantly to the Liberian people.
It is a country and a people that we at CHAP International have fallen in love with and it is our desire to see Liberia return to its former glory. We desire to show a hurting and needy people the love of Jesus Christ through our humanitarian programs. Through sustainable programs like our River Gee Farming Project to heart-led ministries such as the Widow Outreach Program. Join us as we grow as a community locally to empower a community globally!
